In addition to diagnosing trees, arborists might also be employed to simply maintain a landscape. This might include, but is not limited to, fertilizing and pruning trees. Good arborists are experts at correct pruning (i.e., pruning that goes beyond the level of mere "topping"). Topping is a practice utilized by many inexperienced or amateur arborists, in which the entire tops of trees are leveled. This destructive type of trimming can ultimately be very detrimental to the health of a tree.

Arborists Work for both Public and Private Institutions
Most of the larger urban centers employ professional arborists to help maintain their supply of trees. These "city" arborists will oftentimes have a tree map of the city. This allows them to be able to quickly determine which trees need attending to, whether it be through fertilization, disease prevention, or trimming.
